a.  Sponsors:  This program is co-sponsored for Military and Federal GETN subscribers by the School of Public Health, University at Albany, SUNY and Department of Defense Medical Interagency Satellite Program with the  technical support of the Satellite Education Network (SEN) at Ft. Lee, VA. 
 

b.  Availability:  This program will be available to military and federal GETN/MIST sites that have GETN/ATN/Warrior digital satellite downlinks.  A listing of potential GETN receive sites can be seen here: GETN Site Location. 

MIST affiliate satellite networks such as the VA’s Employee Education System and the Department of Justice Television Network may also carry this program but IAW with their own scheduling.

There is NO C/Ku Band Analog satellite availability for this program. 

Videoconferencing may be available to selected military and federal VTC sites using the USA TNET or the USN CNET networks and other VTC networks able to connect to this satellite feed.  Site coordinators using VTC are responsible for their own bridge coordination.

Will this program be Webcast?  Yes, archived webcast, instructions in final confirmation sent out 24 – 48 hours prior to broadcast.

c.  Target Audience Statement:  The target audiences for these programs will be Surgeon Generals, military and federal medical personnel, hospitals, and units, parents, DOD school counselors and teachers as well as others with a need to better understand why teenagers consider suicide and often self injure themselves.

d.  Program  Summaries:

Program One:

Teen Depression and Suicide; 1100-1200 - David Shaffer, MD, a world-renowned child psychiatrist and expert on adolescent suicide, will present a comprehensive overview of what we know about the underlying causes of youth suicide and the early identification on an evidence-based mental health and suicide risk screening program, developed as a direct outgrowth of his research on adolescent suicide.

Program Two:

Self Injurious Behavior; 1200-1300 -  It is widely believed that the number of youth who intentionally injure their bodies by cutting, burning, or engaging in other forms of mutilation has increased in recent years.  Join Dr. Janis Whitlock as she summarizes what we know and don't know about self-injury.  In addition to sharing what is known about the prevalence, nature, and contagiosity of self-injurious behavior in the general youth population, she will share results from a New York State study of self-injury in schools.  The talk will end with recommendations for detection, intervention, and prevention of self-injury in adolescents and young adults.
