It’s your program for valuable information!
a. Program Description: It began simply enough with the label H1N1 Influenza A Virus. By late April, 2009, the acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency as it spread from Mexico to several states. On June 11, the World Health Organization declared the existence of a global pandemic. Estimates state 90-million United States citizens will be infected in coming months. In November 2009, Live Response takes a hard look at this pandemic. We’ll talk with experts from the American Medical Association to explore the pertinent questions. Is there still cause to fear the virus? How does H1N1 compare to the influenza epidemic of 1918 when more soldiers died from this flu then from combat in World War I? This episode will also introduce a new web-based course being offered called CitizenReady. Presented by the AMA, the course is the result of a grant from the Department of Homeland Security to help you prepare and respond to this new strain of virus. This will include historical references to pandemics such as the 2003 SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) case; and discussion of community preparedness and responsibilities in health care, in our schools and workplaces. We’ll look at what you can do that will ultimately minimize the effects of this virus if it should strike you or your family. Our expert panel will also look at the role played by first responders in coming months; along with the latest news, updates and important information that may help you to better understand what lies ahead as flu season gets underway. Join us!
