d. Program Summary: An increasing number of children in the United States are exposed to toxic chemicals because methamphetamine laboratories are being operated in or near their homes. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reports 3,300 children were found in the 8,000 meth labs seized nationwide in 2003. Children who inhabit homes where laboratories are present often inhale dangerous chemical fumes or gases or ingest toxic chemicals or illicit drugs. Exposure to these substances can cause serious short – and long-term health problems including damage to the brain, liver, kidneys, lungs, eyes and skin. Children whose parents or legal guardians produce or abuse methamphetamine also are likely to develop emotional and behavioral problems stemming from abuse or neglect. Few areas in the country have programs in place to coordinate the social and legal aspects of cases involving children at methamphetamine laboratories; however implementation of an effective program is possible. The goal of this broadcast is the educate the public about the problem, provide solutions, and present ways that coal can become more involved in protecting children and reducing the tragic human costs associated with drug abuse.
Witness what it is truly like to enter a meth site. We go onsite to give you a first-hand view of what law enforcement often finds at a meth “cook site.” The broadcast will also feature a roundtable of experts who will share their views.
e. Program Objectives: Viewers of this program will understand how drug abuse can have a lasting effect on children, the individual, the family, our communities, the economy, our environment and our security.
Consider these facts:
90 % of the identity theft cases are generated by drug users, mostly methamphetamine users.
In 2001, over 6 million children live with at least one parent who abused or was dependent upon alcohol or illegal drugs.
The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) reports 3,300 children were found in the 8,000 meth labs seized nationwide in 2003.
In 2000, Americans spent $64 billion to buy illegal drugs, and amount larger than that year’s combined revenues of the four largest food giants in the Fortune 500.
The $181 billion in social costs attributed to drug abuse in 2002 cost the American family an average of $2,446.
For each pound of methamphetamine produced, five to six pound of hazardous waste is generated.
Second only to alcohol, marijuana is the drug most detected in impaired drivers, fatally injured drivers and motor crash victims. Almost as many young people drive under the influence of marijuana as alcohol.
We all have a role to play in reducing the damage that drugs cause to our society. We can help make our communities safer and healthier. Join host Kareemah Abdullah from the National Community Anti-Drug Coalition Institute and her expert panel, including nationally recognized leaders from DEA and NIDA, for a discussion of this fascinating topic—the “secondhand smoke” analogy—for the drug problem.
