Of the estimated 1.2 million coronary attacks to be experienced by Americans in 2006, almost half (500,000) will be recurrent events.1  Accordingly, secondary prevention is an essential part of the comprehensive care of the patient with coronary heart disease (CHD).  The American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) recently issued new, evidence-based guidelines regarding the management of atherosclerotic disease, an important CHD risk factor, in patients following a heart attack.

School violence includes not only the extreme physical assaults we read about but also the day to day bullying and disrespect that can sometimes lead to violent outbursts or to suicide.  Viewers will hear Col. Harry Corbitt, a veteran of the NYS Police, describe the breadth of approaches used in his urban school district, and Ira Baumgarten, an NCBI facilitator, explain how two programs on School Violence Prevention and Building a Caring School Environment work together to create safer schools.

(Repeats from 23 Oct 06) - The incidence of infectious disease events are increasing worldwide at a time when there are more restrictions placed on the use of veterinary drugs and a growing concern by the public over the safety of the food supply.  To address this situation, the emphasis has turned towards enhanced biosecurity.  We have known for years how to biosecure premises but implementation of these measures is inconsistent.  This is true at different levels in production systems.

As public health officials, how can we best address the needs of a growing population in an ever changing environment?  Public health leaders are already involved in a wide array of health promotion, prevention and disease management programs from AIDS to zoonoses, anti-smoking and immunization campaigns, safe food and water inspections, plus bioterrorism preparedness.  But now, as we learn more about the social determinants of health: education, income, housing and transportation – we need to examine an even broader framework for public health action in our communities, large and small.  In this program we’ll discuss these new challenges for public health professionals.

In 1970, Title X of the Public Health Service Act was enacted by Congress with bipartisan support and signed into law by President Nixon.  Title X was designed to make contraceptive supplies and services available to all who wanted and needed them but who were unable to afford them without government assistance.  The intent of this legislation was to make readily available a broad range of effective and acceptable family planning methods on a voluntary and confidential basis.

Explosions can produce unique patterns of injury seldom seen outside combat. When they do occur, they have the potential to inflict multi-system life-threatening injuries on many persons simultaneously.  Blast-related injuries can present unique triage, diagnostic, and management challenges to providers of emergency response care.  Unfortunately few public health professionals have experience with explosive-related injuries.

Sun-Tzu once wrote that to win at war you must know the enemy as you know yourself.  This means knowing the manner in which the war will be fought.  Winning the war on terrorism requires a practical understanding of the nature of terrorism and those who use it.  This program will focus on the most important component of the war, which is the psychology of the weapon itself and its implications for public health preparedness and response.
