(Current Quarter of FY08 Program Listing)
NOTE: This satellite program listing IS NOT an all-inclusive listing of all known satellite programming. It is a representative listing of free, interagency satellite programming whose delivery is coordinated by our offices for primarily Federal and Military downlink sites that use digital compressed video (CDV) satellite downlinks within the Military/Federal Government Education and Training (GETN) satellite networks. GETN Networks are closed, private, encrypted satellite networks. Some programs may also be available to non-military or non- federal civilian sites via analog C/Ku satellite downlinks that are found at many civilian locations and some military/federal sites. Please carefully note the available delivery modalities in the "Platform" column before registering for any particular program to ensure your site has the necessary equipment to receive the program. This listing is provided merely as a public service to the military/ federal communities at large. All program dates and times are subject to change without notice at the discretion of the broadcast sponsor. (POC is Ed Kronholm; 1-480-730-1388 or email; edkronholm@aol.com. )

“Moving Addiction Therapy into the 21st Century: Practical Management Options” (Repeat) A
DOD-MIST Program For Military/Federal CE Credits |
GETN-CDV Warrior; NO C/KU; Limited VTC; WEBCAST NO TAPES! |
According to a study published by the National Center on Addiction and
Substance Abuse at Columbia University, less than 20% of physicians
consider themselves “very prepared” to diagnose alcohol dependence.
In sharp contrast, a large proportion of these same physicians feel “very
prepared” to identify hypertension (83%), diabetes (82%), and depression
(44.1%). When asked about treatment, researchers found that most
physicians feel treatment is “very effective” for hypertension (85.7%),
diabetes (69%), and depression (42.5%), but only a few feel treatment is
“very effective” for alcoholism (3.6%).(2) Expanded program description at: Addiction Therapy-Practical Options 01 Oct 07 |

In addressing the emerging and re-emerging
challenges of public health in the 21st century, CDC is focusing efforts
to improve the health of Americans through a more integrated and
comprehensive approach. CDC’s Healthy Places goals examine a broad
spectrum of health issues associated with communities, homes, schools,
workplaces, healthcare facilities, institutions, and
transportation/recreational facilities. This approach seeks to address the
potential human health impacts of physical space and environmental
exposure. Healthy communities are places where public health
systems, social infrastructure and policies support health and essential
public health services (including quality health care) that are readily
available to all. Expanded description at: Healthy Places Leading to Healthy People 02 Oct 07 |

“Short-Term Birth Interval: Counseling Family Planning Patients” (New) A
DOD-MIST Program For Military/Federal CE Credits |
GETN-CDV Warrior; NO C/KU; Limited VTC; WEBCAST NO TAPES! |
Many
studies show that infants born at a healthy interval are more likely to
survive, less likely to be premature or low birth weight, and less likely
to be malnourished. Longer birth intervals are not only healthier
for mothers and their children but it enables parents to devote more time
to each child in the early years, gives parents more time for activities
other than child rearing and often eases pressure on family finances.
Couples and individuals need to make their decisions on birth spacing
based on accurate information and with a range of contraceptive options.
Healthcare providers and family planning programs have a responsibility to
help them. Although not always addressed specifically, promoting
birth spacing has long been a central goal of family planning programs.

“Historical Roots of Bio-Terrorism” -
1000-1200 ET - A historical
review of bioterrorism begins with the Sumerian tablets around 3000 BC
that relate knowledge of contaminated objects leading to pestilence. The
September 11th attacks and the subsequent anthrax letters have focused
renewed attention on modern day terrorism involving chemical, biological,
radiological, or nuclear weapons. " Bio-Security: Perception is Not Reality" - 1300-1430 ET - The incidences of infectious disease events are increasing worldwide at a time when there are more restrictions placed on the use of veterinary drugs and a growing concern by the public over the safety of the food supply. To address this situation, the emphasis has turned towards enhanced biosecurity. We have known for years how to biosecure premises but implementation of these measures is inconsistent. schools, and families. History tells us that flu pandemics are a reality:
in the past century alone, three of them caused widespread loss of life
and the wholesale disruption of societies small and large. A flu outbreak
today similar to the one that occurred in 1918 could potentially kill
millions and profoundly affect institutions such as our nation’s school
systems, which are teeming with children who are expected to have high
rates of infection and are more likely than adults to spread the illness.

stroke continues to be an important public health concern—almost a third
of the estimated 700,000 strokes that occur each year in the United States
are secondary strokes. Substantial evidence indicates that recurrent
ischemic stroke can be prevented. An effective prevention strategy
involves management of all modifiable risk factors and requires lifestyle,

The
food industry, including livestock, is one of the most open industries in
North America, and is readily susceptible to outbreaks of Foreign Animal
Disease (FAD). FAD could be introduced accidentally - as happened in
the UK - or it could be introduced intentionally. History has
illustrated that during an FAD, there is massive and widespread
depopulation of millions of animals and a major disruption to most related
livestock industries. There also are significant ill effects on
domestic and export markets for meat and milk, and the potential for a
downward spiral for the national economy. |

Weight gain is an important contributing factor to
metabolic syndrome, as it is a key component in the development of
diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. In patients with
psychiatric disorders, mortality linked to metabolic syndrome is
compounded by behaviors such as heavy smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and
poor eating habits. Weight gain can affect medication adherence and
data continues to emerge on the link between diabetes and cognitive
dysfunction, all of which can negatively impact patient outcomes.
Treatment with antipsychotic agents may also play a role in weight gain.
This problem highlights several important needs: careful screening to
recognize factors that may contribute to metabolic syndrome, appropriate
selection of an antipsychotic agent, systematic monitoring, and effective
management. Expanded description at: Antipsychotic-Induced Weight Gain 05 Dec 07 |

Public
health officials and members of the business community are discovering the
mutual benefits of partnering to get Pills into People. Bound
together by a common goal—protecting the health and safety of the citizens
of the community—public health and business are finding new strategies to
solve some of the problems inherent in a mass antibiotic dispensing
campaign. Both sides of this multidisciplinary partnership have
something unique to offer and also to gain in this relationship. For
example, when local businesses are willing to dispense antibiotics to
employees and their families, the number of people who will report to
community Points of Dispensing (PODs) can be significantly reduced.
This relieves some of the burden on the PODs and offers businesses the
opportunity to protect their employees and maintain continuity of
operations. This broadcast will focus on the development of these
public-private partnerships. Panelists will discuss methods for
locating and reaching-out to businesses and identify significant
challenges, possible solutions, and opportunities involved in this type of
community outreach. In addition, business leaders and public health
professionals will share their experiences in forming these partnerships.

Many
studies show that infants born at a healthy interval are more likely to
survive, less likely to be premature or low birth weight, and less likely
to be malnourished.

Program # 1 “Risk Factor Controls for Stroke”
1100-1200 -
Recurrent stroke continues to be an important public health
concern—almost a third of the estimated 700,000 strokes that occur each
year in the United States are secondary strokes. Substantial evidence
indicates that recurrent ischemic stroke can be prevented. An effective
prevention strategy involves management of all modifiable risk factors and
requires lifestyle, medical and, possibly, surgical intervention.

“Taking a Sexual History” (Repeat)

A
sexual history is important for all patients because it provides
information identifying high-risk behaviors leading to an unintended
pregnancy and/or a sexually transmitted infection, including HIV.
Taking a thorough sexual history can also be a gateway for direct
essential risk reduction counseling. Many patients, and sometimes
the clinicians, are embarrassed or feel uncomfortable talking about sexual
issues. It is important for the provider to be competent and
professionally skilled in talking with the patient(s) in a non-threatening
manner, to find out what problems exist, and uncover the appropriate
background information and clinical history. With the right
consultation tools, a sexual history can be performed efficiently when
time is a critical factor in the clinic setting. |

communication skills will also enhance your ability to handle the
difficult behavior you may encounter as you care for a person with a
dementing illness. |

Hurricanes,
tornadoes, bioterrorism, and pandemic flu are all examples of events that
create emergencies for the public health system. Regardless of the
type of event, when such emergencies occur, communities and individuals
face real difficulties related to the need to obtain and properly use
pharmaceutical products or the need to maintain appropriate pharmaceutical
therapies. Pharmacists serve the fundamental role in our
ability, as a society, to initiate a pharmaceutical emergency response
where needed, and to maintain appropriate pharmaceutical care for a
damaged community. |

In
1988, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initiated the Youth
Risk Behavior Survey in order to process and identify the leading causes
of mortality, morbidity, and social problems among our youth. These
behaviors were identified and categorized into six risk areas: 1)
behaviors that result in unintentional and intentional injuries; 2)
tobacco use; 3) alcohol and drug abuse; 4) sexual behaviors that result in
HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended
pregnancies; 5) physical inactivity; and 6) dietary behaviors. The
collected data is assembled by surveying Alabama 15–19 year olds every
other year. The trends that are recorded are compared to the National
Average and studied by educators and health professionals to determine the
prevalence of health-risk behaviors. |
