d. Program Summary: When you took your oath, you swore to protect and serve. How to do you make sure you keep things that way? A law enforcement career is filled with all sorts of temptations that can take you down the wrong path. Keeping ethics in mind sounds easy, but it’s not. It takes hard work. The undercover officer faces ethical dilemmas every day. Do I take the hit? Do I kiss the girl? Do I drink that beer? If you make the wrong choice, it could mean your career, your family, or worse… your life.
During this broadcast, we’ll talk to one detective who made a wrong choice several years ago. He suffered many losses, but is now on the right track. Detective Adrian Duran with the Austin, TX police department is trying to make sure other officers don’t make the same mistakes he did. We’ll also talk to one of Detective Duran’s friends about why he decided to help his fellow officer instead of keeping things to himself. Here’s a hint… he’s glad he did.
The telecourse will also include a segment with Henry Levenson. Lt. Levenson will talk about how to avoid the pitfalls undercover work can bring. He’ll share his experiences and some simple ethical tests you can give yourself when you have choices to make.
Craig Michaels will talk about why ethical problems happen. It sounds simple, but many different factors from department policy to personal preferences play roles.
Even though the word “undercover” is in the title of this telecourse, law enforcement officers of all kinds will learn something.
