d. Program Summary: September is National Youth Court Month and the contributions of these programs are being honored across the nation. Youth courts are emerging as one of the leading youth-driven and youth-led crime intervention and prevention programs in the nation. Youth courts, also known as teen courts or peer juries are programs where juveniles, under the supervision of representatives from the educational and legal communities, determine sentencing for first-time juvenile offenders who are charged with misdemeanors or minor infractions of school rules. The success of the courts is due in large part to the thousands of attorneys, judges and law enforcement officials who volunteer their time and expertise in assisting school officials and students. Join guest Administrator Robert Flores from the office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Assistant U.S. Attorney John R. Duncan from the Northern District of New York, William C. Pericak, Assistant U.S. Attorney from the Albany Office in the Northern District of New York, former Chief of Police John Gilbert and host Tracy Godwin-Mullins, Director of the National Youth Court Center Council of State Governments/American Probation & Parole Association as they explore the countless ways in which US Attorneys, Assistant US Attorney’s, and their legal staff can team with local law enforcement and school officials in assisting students with their proceedings. The goal is to form partnerships that will prove to be a positive influence on the youth, the respondents, defendants, volunteers and the surrounding community.
