a.  Sponsors:  This program is co-sponsored for Military and Federal GETN subscribers by the California Distance Learning Health Network and Department of Defense Medical Interagency Satellite Program with the technical support of the Satellite Education Network (SEN) at Ft. Lee, VA.

b.  Availability:  This program will be available to military and federal GETN/MIST sites that have GETN/ATN/Warrior digital satellite downlinks.  A listing of potential GETN receive sites can be seen here: GETN Site Location. 

MIST affiliate satellite networks such as the VA’s Employee Education System and the Department of Justice Television Network may also carry this program but IAW with their own scheduling requirements. 

There is No C/KU Band Analog coordinates for this pre-recorded program.    

Videoconferencing availability may be available to selected military and federal VTC sites using the USA TNET or the USN CNET networks and other VTC networks able to connect to this satellite feed.   Site coordinators using VTC are responsible for their own bridge coordination.

c.  Target Audience Statement:  National audience of federal, military, and local health departments, nurses; staff who work with schools or would be involved with schools during a pandemic, emergency preparedness, pandemic flu program, and BT Coordinators.  Administrators from Military, Federal, county offices of educations, school districts, including county and district superintendents, curriculum directors, and student support services directors.

d.  Program Summary:  The broadcast will cover topics such as school closure, continuity of education, average daily attendance, issues specific to certain populations, and ways schools can incorporate pandemic flu planning into their existing safe school plans.  

Program Objectives:  After the broadcast, participants will be able to:

•  Describe the difference between seasonal influenza and pandemic influenza
•  Locate information about the California state preparedness plan for schools
•  Describe the role of local health departments during a pandemic emergency
•  Describe age-group specific pandemic influenza issues
•  Describe age-appropriate strategies for school-based preparedness and potential issues specific to schools and other education institutions during a pandemic emergency

e.  Tabletop exercise:  The exercise will include a scenario based on a plausible pandemic emergency during which participants develop a portion of a plan or analyze their existing plan, exercise their plan, and debrief the results. For additional information, please visit www.ReadyCASchools.org.

Tabletop exercise objectives:  After the tabletop exercise, participants will be able to:

• List gaps and vulnerabilities in their school preparedness plans
• Identify potential partners to include in the planning process
• Identify next steps for improving preparedness plans
