a. Sponsors: This program is co-sponsored for Military and Federal GETN subscribers by The American Public Health Association with the Alabama Department of Public Health and Department of Defense Medical Interagency Satellite Program with the technical support of the Satellite Education Network (SEN) at Ft. Lee, VA.
b. Availability: This program will be available to military and federal GETN/MIST sites that have GETN/ATN/Warrior digital satellite downlinks. A listing of potential GETN receive sites can be seen here: GETN Site Location.
MIST affiliate satellite networks such as the VA’s Employee Education System and the Department of Justice Television Network may also carry this program but IAW with their own scheduling.
There is No C/Ku Band analog satellite availability for this pre-recorded program.
Videoconferencing may be available to selected military and federal VTC sites using the USA TNET or the USN CNET networks and other VTC networks able to connect to this satellite feed. Site coordinators using VTC are responsible for their own bridge coordination.
Will this program be Webcast? Yes, instructions in final confirmation sent out 24 – 48 hours prior.
c. Target Audience Statement: Military, federal, public health and other professionals with disease surveillance interests, interest in environment health and interest in maximizing global health resources.
d. Program Description: Humans depend on natural ecosystems and the services they provide, including food, energy, and clean air and water. Yet our actions in the past 50 years have changed these systems to an unprecedented degree, altering habitats and reducing biodiversity. This decline is expected to accelerate under most climate-change scenarios. At the same time, new infectious diseases are emerging at a faster rate than ever before, and many of these pathogens are zoonotic in origin. A common, defining feature of emerging infectious diseases is that they are triggered by anthropogenic changes to the environment. But what are the underlying mechanisms of this emergence? Although it is recognized that biodiversity affects human health, a direct connection between biodiversity loss and increased health risks remains largely untested. The National Center for Environmental Research at the U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development has proposed a joint Eco-Health research program to study the link between changes in biodiversity and risks to human health. This presentation will discuss the state of the science, determine research priorities, and begin to talk about how to integrate existing data into the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), a monitoring and risk-forecasting network.
e. Program Objectives:
1. Recognize the value of natural ecosystems and their relationship to human health.
2. Better understand the relationship between climate change and biodiversity loss and the spread and emergence of infectious diseases.
