a. Sponsors: This program is co-sponsored for Military and Federal GETN subscribers by The Alabama Department of Public Health and Department of Defense Medical Interagency Satellite Program with the technical support of the Satellite Education Network (SEN) at Ft. Lee, VA.
b. Availability: This program will be available to military and federal GETN/MIST sites that have GETN/ATN/Warrior digital satellite downlinks. A listing of potential GETN receive sites can be seen here: GETN Site Location.
MIST affiliate satellite networks such as the VA’s Employee Education System and the Department of Justice Television Network may also carry this program but IAW with their own scheduling requirements.

Videoconferencing availability may be available to selected military and federal VTC sites using the USA TNET or the USN CNET networks and other VTC networks able to connect to this satellite feed. Site coordinators using VTC are responsible for their own bridge coordination.

c. Target Audience Statement: The target audiences for this program will be doctors, clinicians, nurses, social workers and others who manage, counsel and educate clients.
d. Program Summaries: In 1970, Title X of the Public Health Service Act was enacted by Congress with bipartisan support and signed into law by President Nixon. Title X was designed to make contraceptive supplies and services available to all who wanted and needed them but who were unable to afford them without government assistance. The intent of this legislation was to make readily available a broad range of effective and acceptable family planning methods on a voluntary and confidential basis.
Over the years, the contraceptive counseling and services available in Title X- funded clinics has helped couples space births and plan intended pregnancies, an important factor in ensuring positive birth outcomes and healthy infants. Research has shown that every public health dollar spent for contraceptive services saves an average of $3 in Medicaid costs for pregnancy-related health care and for medical care of newborns.
In order to offer effective and acceptable contraceptive methods and to provide accurate counseling, it is crucial for the Family Planning provider to be up- to-date on the latest methods available. It is also important to know how to manage common contraceptive problems in order to assist the client in consistent usage of their chosen method.
e. Learning Objectives:
1. Describe current thinking on contraceptive efficacy and the status of experimental contraceptives.
2. Describe the interrelationships of medical contraceptive methods with specific drugs, reproductive disorders and other health problems.
3. Describe the new World Health Organization’s (WHO) medical eligibility criteria; Intrauterine Device (IUD) and teens, IUD and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID); spermicides; and known thrombogenic mutations and oral contraceptives.
4. Discuss management of common contraceptive problems.
