b. Availability: This program will be available to military and federal GETN/MIST sites that have GETN/ATN/Warrior digital satellite downlinks. A listing of potential GETN receive sites can be seen here: GETN Site Locations.
MIST affiliate satellite networks such as the VA’s Employee Education System and the Department of Justice Television Network may also carry this program but IAW with their own scheduling.
There is C/Ku Band analog satellite availability for this program and coordinates will be included in the final confirmation message sent 24-48 hours prior to broadcast.
Videoconferencing may be available to selected military and federal VTC sites using the USA TNET or the USN CNET networks and other VTC networks able to connect to this satellite feed. Site coordinators using VTC are responsible for their own bridge coordination.

c. Target Audience Statement: Federal, military and public health workers, dietitians, and professors and students at schools of public health.
d. Program Description: Kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States. According to the National Institute of Health’s National Kidney Disease Education Program there are more than 20 million Americans with kidney disease. The cost of Chronic Kidney Disease in 2003, exceed $27 billion, an increase of over $5 billion from 2001. It is projected by the year 2030, the number of people with new onset of ESRD will exceed 2 million each year. Chronic Kidney Disease risk factors include: diabetes, hypertension, a family history of kidney failure, cardiovascular disease, obesity and the presence of proteinuria and abnormal serum creatinine. Vital information will be discussed throughout this program on the importance of early detection, primary, secondary, and tertiary care issues, transplantation and nutrition. In addition to these didactic presentations, representatives of three of Alabama’s community organizations will discuss their innovative CKD risk reduction activities.
e. Program Objectives:
1. Describe how primary healthcare professionals use the American Diabetes Association standards of care and the chronic care model in the prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease.
2. Identify three different diets used in the management of various stages of CKD in patients with diabetes.
3. Describe the association between the development of diabetes, cardiovascular and kidney disease and its impact on the healthcare system.
4. Identify the methods used to refer, select, and manage individuals involved in the kidney transplantation process.
5. Identify the importance of early identification and treatment of those with CKD.
6. Describe current activities in Alabama that address the burden of diabetes and the prevention of complications.
