Sponsors: This program is co-sponsored for Military and Federal GETN subscribers by The South Central Center for Public Health Preparedness in partnership with the Alabama Department of Public Health and Department of Defense Medical Interagency Satellite Training Program with the technical support of the Satellite Education Network (SEN) at Ft. Lee, VA.
b. Availability: This program will be available to military and federal GETN/MIST sites that have GETN/ATN/Warrior digital satellite downlinks. A listing of potential GETN receive sites can be seen here: GETN Site Locations.
MIST affiliate satellite networks such as the VA’s Employee Education System and the Department of Justice Television Network may also carry this program but IAW with their own scheduling.
There is No C/Ku Band analog satellite for these taped programs.
Videoconferencing may be available to selected military and federal VTC sites using the USA TNET or the USN CNET networks and other VTC networks able to connect to this satellite feed. Site coordinators using VTC are responsible for their own bridge coordination.

c. Target Audience Statement: This program is designed for Military Chaplains, school counselors, nurses, social workers, mental health and chemical addiction professionals and administrators with responsibility for or contact with at-risk youth.
d. Program Description (Program One) “What School Counselors Need to Know” 1100-1300 ET: This presentation will provide a brief overview of suicide in America, the goals and objectives of the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, 2001, and how developing social policy is impacting the training and practice of school counselors. Also included is a review of the relationship of untreated mental illness and suicide risk in youth and a description of the QPR Suicide Risk Reduction Program for Schools.
Program Objectives:
1. Describe the size and scope of the problem of youth suicide in America.
2. Identify key elements of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, 2001.
3. Describe three program options for reducing suicide attempts and completions in school settings.
4. Describe the implications for training and practice in the assessment and referral of care of at-risk youth.
5. Describe QPR theory and a systems approach to creating safer schools for at-risk youth.
Program Description (Program Two) “What Mental Health Practitioners Need To Know” 1400-1630 ET: This presentation will provide an overview of suicide prevention and risk assessment, including the latest research on scope of problem and recommended strategies for prevention and risk reduction; describe the risk relationship of mental illness and substance abuse to suicide attempts and completions; identify implications for management and practice using a framework of practical strategies including risk identification and referral, “gatekeeper” concept; describe risk assessment strategies and a systemic approach to risk reduction including frameworks and tools.
Program Objectives:
1. Describe suicide prevention and risk assessment.
2. Describe the latest research on the scope of suicide.
3. Recommend strategies for prevention and risk reduction.
4. Describe the risk relationship between mental illness and substance abuse to suicide attempts and completion.

f. Program Panelist: Paul G. Quinett PhD; Clinical Psychologist, President and CEO of the QPR Institute. Dr. Quinett is also the author of seven books and an award-winning journalist as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of Washington, School of Medicine in Seattle.
