(Repeats 1500-1600 ET)

Available on GETN/Warrior Satellite Platforms

a.  Sponsors:  This program is co-sponsored for Military and Federal GETN subscribers by The American Heart Association and Department of Defense Medical Interagency Satellite Program with the technical support of the Satellite Education Network (SEN) at Ft. Lee, VA.

b.  Availability:  This program will be available to military and federal GETN/MIST sites that have GETN/ATN/Warrior digital satellite downlinks.  A listing of potential GETN receive sites can be seen here:  GETN Site Locations.

MIST affiliate satellite networks such as the VA’s Employee Education System and the Department of Justice Television Network may also carry this program but IAW with their own scheduling.

There is C Band analog satellite available for this program, NO Ku Band.  Coordinates will be sent in the final confirmation message 2-3 business days prior to broadcast.

Videoconferencing may be available to selected military and federal VTC sites using the USA TNET or the USN CNET networks and other VTC networks able to connect to this satellite feed.  Site coordinators using VTC are responsible for their own bridge coordination.

Will this program be Webcast?   Possibly…..more information in the final confirmation message.

c.  Target Audience Statement:  The target audience for this broadcast is military and federal physicians, cardiologists, internists, hospitalists, emergency physicians, primary care providers, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals involved in the care and treatment of patients with CVD.

d.  Program  Description:  The role of lipids in the development of atherosclerosis has clearly been demonstrated.  There now is convincing evidence to demonstrate that high cholesterol and low high-density lipoprotein levels during adolescence initiate and accelerate the pathologic changes in coronary arteries that lead to atherosclerosis.  Accordingly, CVD primary prevention strategies need to be started at an earlier age.  Implementing strategies to identify children at high risk for CVD and effectively minimize risk factors is of the utmost importance if we are to curtail the early onset of atherosclerosis and slow progression to CVD.  The American Heart Association (AHA) has provided guidance regarding the identification of children at risk for CVD and is in the process of developing a scientific statement to address the medical management of hyperlipidemia in high risk adolescents.

Treating Adolescent High Risk Hyperlipidemia: The Role of Lipid Normalizing Agents will examine:

1) the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis in childhood and adolescence,
2) modifiable risk factors that accelerate the atherosclerotic process,
3) the efficacy and safety of lipid-lowering agents in children with high risk hyperlipidemia,
4) strategies for maintaining lifestyle and therapy compliance in the adolescent population.

The AHA guidelines and statements for the primary prevention of CVD and management of high risk hyperlipidemia in children will serve as the basis for this discussion.

Learning Objectives:  After completing this activity, participants should be able to:

- Describe the process and factors associated with atherosclerosis that begins in childhood
- Assess cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in adolescent patients
- Communicate the AHA guidelines for the primary prevention of CVD beginning in childhood and the recent AHA publication regarding the medical management of dyslipidemia in adolescents
- Evaluate clinical data regarding the efficacy and safety of lipid-lowering agents in children with high risk hyperlipidemia
- Implement strategies to effectively manage CVD risk factors in adolescent patients, including appropriate medical therapy in those with high risk hyperlipidemia
-Employ strategies for maintaining lifestyle and drug therapy compliance in adolescent patients at high risk for CVD
